The delight of Crazy Rich Asians combined with the risqué insanity of a Judd Apatow comedy, Bridesmaids, or The Hangover would make a great movie this summer. Exactly why not? Adele Lim, a writer for CRA, and Seth Rogan, who is well-versed in ridiculous raunch, produced and directed Joy Ride.

The movie’s four leading ladies Ashley Park as Audrey, Sherry Cola as Lolo, Sabrina Wu as Deadeye, and Stephanie Hsu as Kat travel to Asia to assist Audrey, a lawyer, in completing a task that would ensure her promotion and, eventually, lead her to her biological mother. The sarcastic Lola travels to help Audrey, her best friend, who is unfamiliar with Mandarin. Deadeye is well-versed in K-pop, and Kat, who is now a star on the Chinese screen, is engaged to an alluring but devout co-star (Desmond Chiam).

Audrey, who controls much of the comedy while maintaining her embarrassingly stuffy legal air, plays a part that is easily comparable to Kristen Wig’s in Bridesmaids. The movie Deadeye clearly establishes itself in the present gender identity space.

Along the way, they make fun of American and Asian stereotypes with the levity of young, healthy ladies having a good time free from political correctness and proper behavior. A remix of the popular song “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion may have the wildest elements. That tune has a strong backbeat and is innovative.

Finding your identity in the midst of the cultural pulls of Asia and America is a subject that runs through crude humor and ridiculous sexual scenarios. Nothing is off limits for this comedy, which is rife with stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans.
