Hypnotic begins with a suddenly awakened eye fixing itself to a position of attention upon hearing someone call out to him by his name, “Rourke,” throbbing ticking sounds of a clock, someone tapping a pen in time with the rhythms of the clock, and finally Rourke recovering himself from his momentary drift and returning to the room where he is seated. Given the commonplaceness of these tropes, it doesn’t take long for all of these images and the mise-en-scene to give the idea that Rourke (Ben Affleck) is the one who has come for treatment and that this is a therapist’s office.
Rourke describes the event with his daughter after being questioned to divulge the spot where he wandered. We learn that Rourke’s daughter was abducted, and we also learn who the likely suspect is, according to Rourke. It soon becomes out that Rourke is a detective with the Austin Police Department looking for his missing daughter. The call of duty an anonymous tip revealing an upcoming armed robbery at an Austin bank interrupts his therapy session, though.
At the location, Rourke and his squad start to keep a tight check on the area around the bank—that is, until Rourke’s eyes come into contact with the weird man’s form. This weird man is strange in more ways than one. First, he makes Rourke experience déjà-vu, and second, he seems to be able to influence people’s behavior with seemingly innocent pleasantries and straightforward eye contact.
Rourke discovers that the robbery, which he initially dismissed as a prank, is no ordinary bank robbery and demands more serious attention than ever before—since this robbery and its mastermind may have some connection to his daughter. Rourke discovers this after sneaking into the bank’s locker room and breaking open the locker for which the tip was given. A Polaroid of his missing daughter with the terse order “Find Lev Dellrayne” is discovered in the locker by the man.
The caller’s identity is soon discovered, and all signs point to one Diana Cruz (Alice Braga), a psychic reader. The identity of the weird man who always appears to be following Rourke is also revealed—at least momentarily—and it is the enigmatic Dellrayne. Diana Cruz introduces Rourke to the greater hypnotics community, the quasi-governmental organization known as The Division, which discovered human hypnotic talents, its motivations for using this untapped talent, and Dellrayne’s place in this community.
She tells him that Dellrayne is a “legend” and one of the most potent hypnotists, forcing people to believe in the mental construct he crafts for them. She continues by saying that despite the fact that she is a natural hypnotist, she has never been successful in hypnotizing Rourke. She ascribes it to Rourke having a psychological barrier.
She does caution that Dellrayne can easily do what she is unable to. The result is a series of near-fatal escapes from Dellrayne, each time to learn more about Dellrayne and the reasons behind his irrational pursuit for Project Domino. And considering where Dellrayne takes them, it appears that her ulterior goals could be limited to Rourke’s daughter, Minnie (for the time being).
Diana Cruz, the dime-store medium, is a fabrication; she does not genuinely exist. Diana has always been Rourke’s wife, Vivian, and Vivian has played a role in The Division’s greater scheme to force Rourke to recollect his memories. Later, though, we learn that Vivian had also erased her memories to protect their kid, just like Rourke had done.
This means that what The Division injected into her clear mind led to her act of taking Rourke and other Division agents hostage in order to get Minnie alias Domino back. Even this brief takeover of Vivian by The Division is in Rourke and Minnie’s best interests since Vivian served as bait to draw everyone connected to The Division toward Minnie so that she could have the decisive confrontation.
Everything culminates in a final battle between the three members of the family and The Division agents led by the antagonist previously known as “Dellrayne.” The Division and Vivian must confront Rourke’s parents when they arrive to the property owned by his foster parents at the end of Deer Valley Ln. Diana (or Vivian) is a little perplexed when she hears the elderly couple refer to her as a family member and that they have missed her. She asserts that she is unfamiliar with them.
