Richard Madden’s character, Mason Kane, was previously one of the top spies for Citadel, an organization that worked independently of all governments and with the goal of defending mankind from external dangers. Along with Citadel’s other top agent Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), Mason went on a mission that turned out to be a trap set by the evil group Manticore, which caused Citadel to fall apart and Mason to lose his memory, thinking he was Kyle Conroy, an alias. Mason/Kyle has been married to Abby (Ashleigh Cummings) for 8 years; they have a daughter named Hendrix (Caoilinn Springall), but he still has no recollection of his life before to these 8 years, other than brief flashes in his dreams.
When Mason/Kyle takes a second DNA test, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), his former tech support specialist at Citadel, notices him and informs him that Manticore is planning something significant, and he must utilize his dormant ability to thwart it. The five-year-long project Citdael, a partnership between Amazon Studios and producers Joe and Anthony Russo, aims to build a global spy franchise with a mothership series and several planned local language spin-offs. At this time, there are two confirmed local language series: an Indian and an Italian one, with more in various stages of development.
Citadel, with a first season of six episodes, is renowned for having one of the highest production costs ever, with an estimated $300 million budget, much of which is attributed to reshoots that were done when David Weil took over as showrunner from the original showrunners. Citadel has plenty of scale and production value the first two episodes are currently online but it all serves a pretty safe and very formulaic spy thriller that seems like a rehash of the “greatest hits” of the previous 20 years’ worth of spy films.
Since the first two episodes have largely consisted of fairly typical expositional moments, hunts for macguffins, and battle scenes, there isn’t much to say about Citadel that truly lends it much of a unique personality. The majority of the cast isn’t really given all that much to work with, so Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas just feel like placeholders in roles that could’ve been played by anyone and it’d hardly matter who you chose to play them. However, I did like Stanley Tucci adding some personality to his tech expert character Bernard Orlick by adding some punch to his lines.
Citadel is only time filler, albeit skillfully and attractively designed time filler. It’s incredible that despite a series having this much financial support and coming from significant production companies, there isn’t really anything to speak about in what is meant to be a key hook to attract viewers.
